How to Curl your Hair

If you have straight hair and are envious of the beautiful curls you see on your friends and in magazines, don’t worry, you can have curls, too. It will take a little more work because you have to create the curls yourself, but it is a great way to try something new or have a new style for a special event. Here is are four steps on how to curl your hair

Step 1: Prepare your hair

First, you need to wash and condition your hair. Use your ordinary shampoo and conditioner. Make sure you condition. If your hair gets oily and you don’t use conditioner as much, try to at least get conditioner towards the end of your hair.

Once it’s shampooed, conditioned, and clean, lightly dry it with a towel. If you have shoulder length hair, take about a dime sized amount of leave-in conditioner with twice as much gel. Use more if your hair is longer. Comb it through your hair.

Step 2: Start Wrapping

Now you will need a spray bottle, comb, and curlers. There are many different kinds of curlers. If you want big bouncy curls, use larger curlers. Don’t use huge curlers because since your hair is naturally straight, they won’t keep the curl as well and if the curls are too big, they may just go straight.

Take small once inch sections of your hair and wrap it around each curler. Wrap it inward so that the top of your hair lies well without looking wacky. Before wrapping, make sure the hair is wet. If it has already started drying, spray it with some water. For extra hold, add a little bit of gel to each section of hair.

Step 3: Wait

Once your hair is all up in curlers, you must wait. Preferably do this in the evening and then you can sleep with your curlers. This will ensure they are 100% dry. If you have thin hair, it won’t take as long as if you have thick or very long hair. The longer you wait, the better your curls will stay.

Step 4: Set the Curls and Finish

When your hair is dry, you are ready to take out the curls. First, take a hair dryer and put it on low. Blow dry your hair for a minute or so. The heat will help set the curls. If your hair isn’t completely dry yet, you can use the blow dryer for a few more minutes until it’s dry. Next, spray your hair lightly with hair spray.

Now, take the curlers out. Be careful so that you don’t pull the curls straight. Just take out the pin or whatever is keeping it up, and let it fall and tumble loose on its own. Once you have all the curls out, spray it all with hairspray.

If your curls look too clumped together, turn your head upside down and shake it out lightly. If you need to, comb your fingers through the curls a little to loosen them up.

If you want to use a curling or hot curlers instead, you can. This will work better for people who are press for time or want to curl their hair for the evening without having to wear curlers all day. All you have to do is place small sections of hair in the curlers or curling iron and hold for a few seconds. Spray it off with lots of hair spray to hold and you’re ready to go!

Once you know how to curl your hair, you can do it day in and day out.
