Short Curly Hair

If you have curly hair, you probably know what it’s like to have frizzy and dry hair, too. It’s usually the dry, frizziness that causes too much volume which is what you hate about curly hair. A dry, frizzy poof is just not attractive.  When you have short curly hair, it can look even poofier.

If you learn how to correctly take care of your curly hair, you could love it. With the right care, you could have the flawless curls on the commercials. Follows these steps to improve your curls.

Wash your Hair

Dirty hair never looks good, but that doesn’t mean you have to shampoo twice a day. Shampoo can be very drying to your hair, especially if you do it too often and use the wrong shampoo.

One way to go is the Curly Girl way. Curly Girl is a book all about curly hair. Pick up a copy if you are interested. The idea is that you never shampoo your hair. Yes, you heard right. On the curly girl plan, you completely throw out your shampoos.

You don’t stop washing your hair, you just don’t use shampoo. Instead, you use a little conditioner on your scalp and scrub it clean. The author of curly girl claims that your curls will look amazing and you’ll never need to shampoo again.

I have tried Curly Girl and have had some good results, but I couldn’t go forever without shampoo. I prefer to shampoo less often with a good shampoo meant for curly or dry hair. Also, I don’t even wet my hair every day. I try to do it just every other day to help keep it from drying out. Remember, just because you are taking a shower, doesn’t mean you have to wash your hair.

Also, you don’t need a lot of shampoo. If you haven’t noticed, shampoo suds up a lot. Just a little on your scalp is plenty. The hair closest to your scalp is what gets the dirtiest because it gets oily from your hair.

Condition ASAP!

Conditioner is curly hair’s best friend. Because short curly hair is so dry, lots of conditioner is necessary to give it the moisture it needs. Every time you wash your hair, you must use a moisturizing conditioner. Make sure the conditioner is meant for curly or dry hair. Check out the best curly conditioners.

Try to concentrate the conditioner on the dryer parts of your hair, such as the tips. Leave it on for at least 3 minutes, even if the bottle says to rinse out right away. Leaving it on longer will make it softer.

Along with a daily conditioner, you should use a deep conditioner or hot oil treatment every week or so. There are many great deep conditioners out there. Check out my recommendations. I suggest using one at least once a month and try to leave it on for at least 5 minutes. Try to do it once a week and you’ll see better results. It’s not necessary to do it more often than that. Your daily conditioner will take care of in between.

Daily Wear

A leave-in conditioner is excellent for your hair. You could just go straight to your gel or serum, but adding a leave-in conditioner right out of the shower will keep your hair soft and frizz-free.

These are the basic care instructions for short curly hair. Beyond this is styling. Use what works for you, but be sure not to overload your hair with styling products or it will look wet all the time and you will need a lot of shampoo often to get it out.
